4th Asian Conference on Food and Nutrition Safety

3/2/2004 - 3/5/2004

On behalf of the organizing committee, we take great pleasure in inviting you to attend the 4th Asian Conference on Food and Nutrition Safety, March 2 – 5, 2004, to be held at the Bali International Conference Center (BICC), Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia.

This conference, the fourth in the series, has become the key food safety meeting in Asia. It brings together internationally renowned experts and stakeholders to discuss current and emerging issues, future directions and action plans on food safety and related nutrition topics. First held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1991, past conferences were in Bangkok, Thailand in 1994 and Beijing, People’s Republic of China in 2000.

This conference theme, Emerging Food and Nutrition Safety Issues and their Impact on Science, Health, and Economics, will focus on safety issues along the farm-to-fork continuum. The conference will address a range of topics, including risk assessment of inherent mycotoxins, the impact of farming and agricultural practices, unintended microbial contamination throughout food processing, and potential concerns from packaging on food safety. The plenary sessions, concurrent symposia, and poster presentations will also highlight new, emerging, and re-emerging food borne illnesses, convergence of animal-to-human diseases in the food chain, and issues on water quality and contaminants. Other topics that will be addressed include dietary exposure and safety assessment of functional and fortified foods of interest to Asian populations, as well as the potential of new technologies to deliver safe and nutritious foods for future health improvement. An optional field trip to the unique Teras Siring and Subak rice irrigation systems offers participants a visit to the breathtaking agriculture belt of the island.

The two-and-a-half-day scientific presentation sessions, satellite workshops, technical field trip, and exhibitions by key food organizations, will provide multiple opportunities for experts and participants to discuss key food and nutrition issues. Scientists and stakeholders from throughout Asia, the Pacific Rim, and other regions will be able to share perspectives, address challenges, and discuss strategies and collaborative programs to enhance the continuing global efforts to deliver safe foods.

We extend a very warm welcome and look forward to your participation at this important meeting at the beautiful island of Bali in March 2004.
